What is Modern Acupuncture and How does it affect the body and work to relieve pain and stress?

Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing used to restore and maintain health and well-being. It has been practiced in China and Eastern countries for at least 2,500 years. The first known book extensively covering acupuncture and herbal medicine is called the Classic of Internal Medicine of the Yellow Emperor. Many of the effective styles of acupuncture currently used around the world trace their roots back to this ancient text.

Acupuncture therapy is ancient and has stood the test of time due to its safe, natural, and effective results.

How does acupuncture affect the body?

Acupuncture needles are thin, hair-like needles that are inserted into activation points with minimal pain. These specific acupuncture points stimulate the central nervous system that in turn, release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These biochemical changes may stimulate the body's natural healing abilities and promote physical and emotional well-being. The process can have similar effects to pharmaceutical drugs, but without the common side effects and long-term dependency.

Around the world, many people turn to acupuncture to help with a personal symptom, condition and to support overall health in a holistic, natural way. Acupuncture is now widely used, accepted, and growing in popularity with clinical trials confirming its efficacy. Millions of patients every year are introduced to acupuncture by their medical doctors as a complementary therapy to support conventional medical treatments. World-class research institutions and hospital systems such as Johns Hopkins, Harvard, and the Mayo clinic support the use of acupuncture for many of their patients.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has shown that acupuncture is an effective treatment alone or in combination with conventional therapies to treat a long list of conditions, including muscle pain, joint pain, arthritis, anxiety, and depression to name a few.

In the US, the majority of acupuncture patients seek relief for chronic pain and stress-related health issues.

Acupuncture for Chronic Pain

Acupuncture, designed to relieve back pain, neck pain, headaches, knee pain, and more works by stimulating nerves located in specific muscles throughout the body. When these nerves are stimulated, they release endorphins and other 'feel good' hormones that transform how the brain processes pain in the spinal cord and brain.

This treatment also helps to reduce inflammation and increases local blood circulation, reduce pain, swelling, and pressure on joints and muscles.

Acupuncture for Stress Relief

When the body is under stress, the HPA axis becomes hyperactive, and acupuncture can calm this response.

Research at many top international institutions shows that stimulating acupuncture points helps to reduce stress and body tension by deactivating the pain and stress regions of the brain. Over time, the result is decreased anxiety, depression, feelings of general stress, and a greater sense of well-being.

“I've been going regularly for acupuncture at least 3-4x a month. Not only have I noticed physical improvements -- but it has done wonders to ease my stress and increase my overall energy levels - important to note considering how much our mental health can positively or negatively affect our physical. What's more, this is one of the most authentic, loving, and cohesive group of professionals and staff I have ever met. I've only had warm and positive interactions with the Acupuncturists and Zen Advisors. Thanks, team, for being such a core part of my wellness.” – Elena V. (IL)
