The Science of Facial Acupuncture

Most people are aware of the benefits acupuncture has to offer such as pain relief and stress reduction, but it may come as a surprise that it can also make you look and feel younger.

A technique known as facial acupuncture can reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve your complexion, and restore a more youthful, natural glow.

How Does Facial Acupuncture Work?

Facial acupuncture treatments involve inserting hair-thin needles into specific acupuncture points on the face and directly into fine lines and wrinkles. This stimulates greater blood flow and nutrients to the face. All of the increased circulation also hydrates the tissues of the skin to promote a naturally healthy look.

Facial acupuncture also triggers a repair mechanism that results in the production of collagen, the body’s natural “filler” for fine lines and wrinkles. The body is designed to repair itself. When the skin is punctured by a fine needle, the body recognizes this as a wound and automatically starts to repair the tissues. Part of that repair process includes the production of collagen and elastin. The natural repair process causes facial lines to fill in, softening or even eliminating the appearance of some lines and wrinkles.

Our licensed acupuncturists can target fine lines and wrinkles in many areas of the face, including ‘smile-lines’, ‘crows-feet’ around the eyes, and the common forehead lines. Over the course of consistent treatments, typically twice per week, wrinkles often become less defined, and the face complexion becomes more youthful.

Additionally, every facial acupuncture treatment incorporates acupuncture points on the body to help correct underlying imbalances, such as chronic stress, that can contribute to signs of aging.

Physical stress such as inflammation, overuse and poor circulation all accelerate tissue damage and the aging process. Mental and emotional stress also leads to accelerated aging, with even clearer correlation between emotional states and the development of facial wrinkles. Chronic stress with emotions such as anger, frustration and fatigue disturb the balance of facial muscle tone, which leads to more defined wrinkles. All types of stress accelerate dysfunction and breakdown of collagen, elastin and the results are clear on the skin and face.

The combination or facial and body acupuncture points helps to restore optimal function of the body, reduce stress, boost overall health and restore a more radiant, youthful appearance.

“My Acupuncturist is so gentle and caring. After treatment, my skin was so soft, and I literally felt like I was glowing.”
