4 Main Causes of Back Pain and How Acupuncture Can Help

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves the insertion of thin needles into specific points to stimulate balance within the body and promote healing.

Acupuncture has been shown to be effective in treating several conditions that can cause back pain, including these top 4:

1) MUSCLE STRAINS AND SPASMS:

Acupuncture can help relax tense muscles and reduce inflammation, which can alleviate pain and discomfort.

2) OSTEOARTHRITIS AND RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS:

Acupuncture can help reduce joint pain and stiffness by increasing blood flow to the affected area and promoting the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers.

3) FIBROMYALGIA:

Acupuncture can help reduce the widespread pain associated with fibromyalgia by releasing tension in the muscles and promoting relaxation.

4) STRESS AND ANXIETY:

Acupuncture can help reduce stress and anxiety by promoting relaxation and releasing endorphins, which can improve overall well-being and reduce pain.

It's important to note that while acupuncture can be effective in treating back pain, it should not be used as a substitute for medical care.

For some, acupuncture can be used as a solo treatment to manage back pain, however for some of those patients, especially with chronic back pain, use acupuncture as a complimentary and integrative practice in addition to their conventional treatment.

Back pain can also have other causes including:

Disc problems: Herniated or bulging discs can put pressure on nerves and cause pain.

Spinal stenosis: A narrowing of the spinal canal can cause pressure on the nerves and lead to pain.

Osteoporosis: A loss of bone density can make the spine more vulnerable to fractures.

Scoliosis: A sideways curvature of the spine can cause pain and discomfort.

Infections: Infections of the spine or surrounding tissues can cause pain and inflammation.

Cancer: Tumors in the spine or elsewhere in the body can cause back pain.

Poor posture: Slouching, hunching over a desk, or carrying a heavy backpack can all contribute to back pain.

Kidney stones: If a kidney stone becomes lodged in the urinary tract, it can cause severe back pain as well as other symptoms like nausea and vomiting.

Endometriosis: This is a condition in which the tissue that lines the uterus grows outside of it, causing pain and discomfort in the lower back and abdomen.

Stress and anxiety: Emotional stress can cause muscle tension and pain in the back, neck, and shoulders.

Talk with your Acupuncturists and see a medical doctor for the most accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan for your specific case of back pain.
